What exactly does the term ‘calculate’ mean?
I’ve always explained it to my daughter like this: I’m a sort of translator. I translate the architects’ drawings – that is, the design drawings – into figures. More precisely, into a budget. That sounds simple, but it’s actually an art form. Because a single line on the plan can mean 100 euros – or 1,000 euros. You have to understand exactly what’s been drawn there, how it can be implemented technically, and what work is required to achieve it. Only once I’ve understood that can I draw up a cost estimate that will actually work on the building site later on.
