Hans is a construction logistics coordinator at ZÜBLIN.

Hans is a construction logistics coordinator and crane operator at ZÜBLIN. He is currently overseeing the refurbishment and extension of an existing building in Frankfurt am Main. In this interview, he explains what makes his job so special – and why no two days are ever the same.

Hans, who are you and what do you do at ZÜBLIN?

My name is Hans; I’m a construction logistics coordinator and crane operator. At our building site in Frankfurt, I work with my team to manage all the logistics processes – from the delivery of materials right through to waste disposal. My job puts me right at the heart of the construction process, and that’s what makes it so exciting for me.

How did you end up in your current job?

In autumn 2020, I started working at ZÜBLIN as a construction logistics coordinator. What excited me about construction logistics right from the start was that it is a very exciting and varied field of work.

What does a typical working day look like for you?

A large part of my day involves coordinating the entire flow of materials on the building site and ensuring that all trades are supplied with the right materials at the right time. I keep an eye on stock levels and regularly check which materials need to be reordered. At the same time, I make sure that deliveries and collections take place on time so that the construction process doesn’t come to a standstill.

  • As a construction logistics coordinator, I ensure that everything is in the right place at the right time on the building site.

Another key aspect of my work is ensuring compliance with all health and safety regulations. I make sure that all guidelines are followed so that we can work safely. This also involves close coordination with the various trades on site – because good communication is crucial to ensuring that all work processes run smoothly together.

In addition, I plan and oversee all site facilities and manage both the organisation of site electricity and waste disposal. Through regular site inspections, I ensure that everything runs in an orderly, safe and efficient manner.

My responsibilities also include managing site access passes and providing skips and storage areas to ensure the site is used to its full potential.

In short: without good logistics, nothing works on a building site!

What skills do you need for your job?

In construction logistics, what you need above all is organisational skills, strong communication skills and a good understanding of technical matters. Flexibility is also important – because something unexpected can always happen on a building site. If you can keep a cool head and enjoy working with lots of people, this is the perfect job for you.

What do you think most people don’t know about your job?

Many people are unaware of just how complex the processes involved in construction logistics are. It requires a great deal of planning, coordination and foresight. You have to keep an eye on the bigger picture – whilst at the same time being able to react quickly to unexpected situations.

Teamwork is essential on building sites. How do you manage this on your site?

Teamwork is absolutely crucial. We communicate openly, support one another and liaise regularly. That way, everyone knows what needs to be done, and we all pull together as a team – that’s the only way a building site can run smoothly.

Are there opportunities for further development?

Absolutely! We actively encourage further training. We organise regular courses, training sessions and in-house programmes that support both professional and personal development. Anyone keen to develop their skills will find plenty of opportunities here.

In 2023, I decided to undertake further training to become a tower crane operator – a decision I have never regretted. I don’t want to stand still and aim to continue my professional development in construction logistics as time allows.
