Project Site Manager Joshua on experience, responsibility and teamwork in complex construction logistics projects

Which project are you currently working on?

Our project involves the refurbishment and reorganisation of the B level at Frankfurt Central Station. The entire construction project is divided into various sub-projects. I am working there as the senior site manager.
 
What are your responsibilities as a senior site manager?

As a seniorsite manager, I’m responsible for managing and coordinating several construction logistics projects in Frankfurt am Main. In this role, I act as the central, overarching point of contact for the client and ensure that the projects are carried out efficiently, cost-effectively and on schedule. I make strategic and cross-functional decisions at project level and ensure compliance with quality, safety and budgetary requirements. At the same time, I manage and support the on-site operational teams, who act as the first point of contact for subcontractors and the client in day-to-day operations. Furthermore, I coordinate the interfaces between all project stakeholders and ensure transparent communication and smooth processes on the building sites.

What are the distinctive features of your current project?

The logistical challenges stem from the city-centre location and the limited space available, which do not allow for the temporary storage of materials. Instead, the materials are predominantly delivered on a just-in-time basis and then transported to the site. The fact that the construction site is underground and has a very winding layout also makes transporting materials within the building a challenge. To address this, we have currently installed five construction hoists in the underground sections of the station.
 
What do you love about your job?

What I like most about myjob is that it offers variety and no two days are the same. Thanks to the challenging projects in the field of construction logistics – ranging from major infrastructure projects to smaller-scale modernisation works – there is a wide range of exciting activities and tasks on offer. What excites me most, in fact, is being able to respond flexibly to a wide variety of challenges and to play an active part in shaping decision-making processes. 

Why did you gradually decide to become a Project BOL after completing your training?

I’ve always enjoyed developing myself both personally and professionally. That’s why, throughout my career, I’ve always tried to learn new things, actively develop my skills and have never shied away from taking on more responsibility. 
 

What experiences have been particularly helpful to you in your career?

Throughout my career, my practical training and the subsequent work experience have been the most helpful. It is only once you understand how the workflows and processes on a building site really work that you can plan and manage them effectively. Likewise, the roughly 2.5 years I spent in construction supervision and gaining an insight from the client’s perspective have been invaluable in helping me understand today what each client’s needs and constraints are. 
 
What advice would you give to young people aiming for a career in the construction industry?

I’d advise young people to gain as much practical experience as possible and to turn their theoretical knowledge into real skills.
